A low economical eCommerce store that has the possible to make millions– That’s your Dropshipping service for you. It’s as straightforward as that.

What is Dropshipping?

Simply put, Dropshipping is the process of shipping goods directly to your customers through/from a third-party supplier. It doesn’t require some intermediary steps like warehousing, and logistics etc.

Business model without Dropshippers:

  • You order products from a supplier to maintain inventory on hand.
  • You store the products until a customer orders them.
  • You process each customer’s order, package the goods, and ship them to the customer yourself.

Business model with Dropshippers:

  • Customers order products from your business.
  • You pass the order details to your Dropshipper.
  • The dropshipper packages the goods and ships them directly to the customer.

Who can be a Dropshipper?

Answer: anyone!

  • Dropshipping is ideal for those who want to bootstrap a business. It requires very little cash to start a dropshipping store.
  • For those who wouldn’t mind some additional income on the side, dropshipping is a great option.
  • Dropshipping is also great for those who want to test out a product or idea. If you want to find out whether there is an audience for your unique idea or product, you can do that with a dropshipping start-up.
  • You want to start an eCommerce business but lack the money to do so? Start small with a dropshipping business and later grow it when your revenue starts coming in.

Many dropshipping businesses in order to achieve sales figures rely solely on social media marketing. But the most important thing to remember here is that the key to success of your store are your buyers. The more buyers you attract to your website, the better are your conversions and revenue.

And the only way customers will be able to locate your store is through Search Engine Optimization (SEO).

Dropshipping websites have some unique set of SEO challenges vis-à-vis ordinary eCommerce stores which need to be kept in mind. From this article Dropshippers will gain some invaluable insight for growing their organic traffic – thus optimizing conversion.

Before answering the question of “How to improve SEO on Shopify dropshipping store?“, we first need to understand the concept of Search Engine Optimization (SEO).

What is SEO?

When we look up something on Google, we usually stick to the websites for answers that Google returns on the first result page, also known as Search Engine Result Page (SERP). Hence, most logically, if you want your online store to be noticed, you need to appear on the very first SERP on Google.

Shopify SEO can be defined as a collection of all efforts or techniques that optimize a Shopify website in order to increase the possibilities of its ranking higher in search engines

Shopify SEO can thus be defined as a collection of all those efforts or techniques that optimize a Shopify website in order to increase the possibilities of its ranking higher in search engines.  Search Engine Optimization can be used in different forms in searches– like videos, images, news and updates etc.

But this definition does not answer your question of “How to improve SEO on Shopify dropshipping store?” in its naked form, so let’s dive into the basics of SEO.

3 simple reasons why you should improve SEO on your your Shopify dropshipping store

It doesn’t really matter how big or small your eCommerce business is, SEO is extremely critical for each one of them for three simple reasons –

1) SEO helps customers find you

Google alone shares a major chunk of profit-producing traffic. Hence, this alone proves that search is the single decision-making criteria. Optimizing search process is what will get you your website traffic and ultimately conversions. By ignoring SEO you’re taking a huge risk of not being visible to your customers when they look for your products. When you aren’t found on search results, lesser number of customers know about you and therefore, you sell less – which slows down your growth.

2) If you improve SEO, it can grow your bottom line while being cost-effective

Paying for website traffic can at times cost you many dollars per click. With effective and well-implemented SEO, you are less dependent on such marketing costs for results. For start-ups, SEO can be a real life-saver which increases sales and keeps the profits flowing. Unlike paid search traffic, yourorganic search traffic comes “free” — with no cost per click, Impression or conversion. Hence, SEO has always been so popular. With SEO, you can attract quality organic traffic without paying for it directly.

3) The effects of SEO are long-lasting and far-fetched.

Unlike many other marketing channels, SEO doesn’t have a shelf life. There is no “pulling the plug” on SEO. For instance, the moment you stop paying for your paid advertising, your traffic drops. SEO on the other hand, keeps going working for you.

SEO builds upon itself to grow stronger gradually and over time. Plus, there is this option of layering upon what you did last year and updating your SEO strategy according to what works till the time you dominate your market. Also, unlike paid advertising, the stream of your website visitors and sales won’t stop the moment you put brakes on your SEO.

How to improve SEO on Shopify dropshipping store – in a nutshell

Shopify SEO Tip 1) KEYWORDS

For better SEO rankings of your dropshipping business, you should pay special attention to the length of content on each page of your website. The number of words you include on your pages, the easier it will be for search engines to understand your page.

Few things to remember if you want to improve SEO via keywords:

  1. Maintain an optimal ratio of keywords in your web content.
  2. Include at least 350 to 500 words per page.
  3. The content needs to be useful and relevant to your target audience.
  4. The content must be natural
  5. Your content will be the platform from where you will have to optimize your keywords, links etc.
  6. Avoid stuffing content at the end of the page, under a menu or an expandable field.
  7. In your product page, add content which describes your product using keywords
  8. Avoid using duplicate content.

Shopify SEO Tip 2) TITLES AND TAGS

If we go by search engines, your H1 tag is one of the first things that describes what a visitor will find on your website. In case of your product page, your H1 tag will be the product title. If it’s a category page, your category name will be your H1 tag.

In Dropshipping business, title tags are important. When someone searches for something, it is the title tag that shows up in search results.

Few things to remember if you want to improve SEO via titles and tags:

  1. Avoid overdoing it with the keywords in your H1 tags to prevent getting spammed by Google or face an over-optimization penalty.
  2. An ideal Title Tag should be below 55 characters.
  3. it should be relevant to search terms you want to rank.

Shopify SEO Tip 3) META DESCRIPTIONS

Meta Descriptions are crucial for dropshipping SEO rankings. Meta descriptions appear right below the title tag and should be between 120 and 155 characters. These should be relevant and describe precisely what a person will find on the page if they click on it. If you are able to nail this, you’ll stand out from the crowd.

Few things to remember if you want to improve SEO via meta descriptions:

  1. Make sure your description tags encourage peoples to click.
  2. Include information such as a how-to guide, a great price or an attention-grabbing list.
  3. For inspiration, read the title tags and meta descriptions of some high-ranking pages.

So, if you ask me, I’d say SEO is as important as marketing in the long term.

1. Keyword Research

The first step to implementing SEO in your dropshipping store is figuring out which keywords you want to rank for.

Now, for example, everyone that has a clothing store can’t rank 1st for the keyword men’s hoodies, right?

That’s where keyword research comes in.

Keyword research is the process by which you research popular search terms people type into search engines like Google, and include them strategically in your content so that your content appears higher on a search engine results page.

You can find keywords that people are typing in Google and get ranked for those keywords with the help of some basic tricks or using some free tools such as Ubersuggest.

You can use Google to find related and long-tail keywords with Keyword.io chrome extension.

Also, you can target these keywords in order to eliminate competition as a long tail keyword has way less competition than a normal keyword.

A longer keyword has fewer search queries and traffic but higher conversions.

Including keywords in your product description strategically can help search engines index your pages in google faster as your product description contains keywords that people are searching on google for.

You can also use Ubersuggest if you have some experience with SEO because Ubersuggest can be a bit overwhelming but it is a great tool.

Just go to Ubersuggest and type in your keyword and click on “Keyword ideas”.

I personally target keywords that have an SD (Search Difficulty) of less than 25.

As you can see the SD for the keyword men’s hoodies is 75 and I’m 99% sure as a startup ecommerce store you cannot rank (Top 10) for the keyword men’s hoodies.

If you are just beginning, then I highly suggest you read the full-in-depth Keyword research guide from Backlinko.

2. Competitors Keyword Research

Knowing what keywords your competitors are ranking for is important.

If your competitors are putting effort ranking for those keywords, then there must be something you are missing.

Competitors’ keyword research is relatively easy as you can do this with any tool such as Moz or Ubersuggest.

We can start our competitor’s keyword research by going to Moz Domain Analysis and typing your website domain.

If you scroll down to the bottom, you’ll be able to find Top Search Competitors.

Now, if your top search competitor is too big like in my case ShopifyAliExpressOberlo, and BigCommerce, then you don’t have to research them, at least not when you are starting out.

But you can go with the small competitors such as dropshipping helps and put their domain in Moz domain analysis, then you can find their competitors (because you’d all have the same niche).

Once you have at least five competitors in your niche, then go-to Ubersuggest and type their domain into Ubersuggest.

You can now see all the keywords that they are ranking for and have an idea of what works in your niche and what does not.

If you want to learn more about competitors’ keyword research, then I highly recommend reading this article from Wordstream.

3. Website Speed

Believe it or not, but website speed indirectly affects SEO negatively, and that’s the last thing you want when starting out, right?

A slow website means a higher bounce rate.

When visitors visit a website and the website takes more than 3-4 seconds, then your bounce rate can go up to 90% according to Google /SOASTA research.

Let’s be real; no one wants to wait more than 2 seconds to load a website.

Website speed is what interests your customers.

If it takes forever to load, then you’ve already lost half of the potential customer’s interest, and that’s not a good start.

Here’s how to ensure your website is at its top speed.

These are just the basics that you should use on any website on WordPress/Shopify to improve page speed.

Or you can read my other article here that contains 7 ways to increase the speed of your Shopify store (Shopify Speed Optimization).

4. Website Structure

Ecommerce website structure is an important aspect of SEO.

It not only helps search engines to find all the pages, but it makes the website user-friendly too.

A proper website structure will also optimize your website’s speed because a proper structure requires fewer codes.

And Google, or other search engine bots, can easily navigate through your website and index it quickly.

A great example of proper ecommerce website structure is:

Ecommerce websites tend to have more pages than classic websites, and if you don’t have a proper structure from the start, then you’ll be easily lost in the future.

A great way to implement this structure on your website is to remember that almost 99% of your pages should be three clicks away from the homepage.

Also, if you already have pages that are live on Google and you want to categorize them properly, then make sure your old URL is a 301 redirect to the new URL or else you’ll lose ranking or Domain/Page authority too.

5. On-Page SEO

Now that you’ve done your keyword & competitors keyword research, now it’s time to use those keywords on your page.

On-page SEO is basically optimizing each individual page for SEO.

Here are a few tips on how to do on-page SEO with the keywords you found.

  • Place the keywords you found in Title, Sub-headers, Meta Descriptions, Image Alt Tags, Descriptions & URL.
  • Write at least a 1000 Word Product Description and include the applicable keywords in it but avoid unnecessary keyword stuffing, which Google may find suspicious.
  • Your product page should contain all the information like Shipping, Returns, Terms of service, etc.
  • Use influential words to Increase CTR

If you want to learn more about what to include on your product page, then I suggest reading this article here (written by this guest post author!)

6. Content Marketing

Now I think content marketing is one of the most crucial parts of SEO for ecommerce.

Content marketing will bring a constant source of organic traffic that will help you establish a connection with your audience.

SEO and Content marketing both go hand in hand.

Both are required to start ranking on search engines.

Content marketing for ecommerce stores contains three steps:

  • Keyword Research
  • Creating content around your products niche
  • Content Marketing

Now, as the keyword research part is already over, two steps are remaining.

1. Creating content around your products niche

Creating a blog around your products or your niche, in general, can really help you get organic traffic & boost your conversions.

When people are looking for a product to purchase, they always start with searching it on Google.

When you have a lot of content around that product or niche, chances are your website will start to rank for those audiences.

Once people land on your blog and read about the product, how it helps, and so on.

Chances of those visitors converting into customers are high because you just provided them some free value.

You can start with writing a 600-800 word blog every week and go skyscraper technique as you go on.

A great example is Petsmart.

2. Content Marketing

Once you’ve started to write awesome pieces of content, its time to market those content to the relevant audience.

SEO takes time.

You don’t want to write one article and expect 1000s of people reading that article on the same day or even month.

To start getting some traction, you can market your content personally by joining communities on Reddit and Facebook.

Let’s say you have a Pet product.

Once you write some blogs around that niche, you can join pet communities on, for example, Reddit

Or you can join Pet groups on Facebook.

You can share your blogs with those communities once in a while.

Now don’t spam them with your content as soon as you join them but take some time to connect with users, and then you can share your content.

Doing this will help you gain some traction at the start.

7. Link Building

Link building is one of the major factors that affect SEO directly and determines your rankings.

For search engines, links are votes that your website has good content and the more links, the higher your DA (Domain authority) and rankings.

But link building too has some gray areas and performing Black/Grey hat link building techniques can lead to Google penalizing you.

Here are some of the White Hat techniques you can use:

  • Guest Blogging
  • Broken link Building
  • Content marketing with emails

Link building is a chapter on its own, and if you are interested in learning more about link building, then I would suggest you check out the Article shared by Moz.
